| Students who scored below an 80 on either of the tests we took at the end of the cycle can do corrections on notebook paper to bring up their grades. Corrections must be labeled "Corrections" and stapled to the original test. They only need to correct what they did not do correctly. They can use the textbook or their notebooks. |

Simple or Compound Sentences Sheet/ Preposition Song (homework)

Students are to label whether each sentence is simple or compound. In addition, they should also label the following:
1. Subject (S) and Predicate(P) for each clause.
*simple sentences have one subject and one predicate.
*compound sentences have one subject and predicate + another subject and predicate.
2. Box the FANBOYS in compound sentence.
*Some of the FANBOYS (coordinating conjunctions) are not connecting two sentences. Don't box those--what we call the little FANBOYS. They are connecting words or phrases, not sentences.
3. Cross out any prepositional phrases you find to make the subjects and predicates easier to locate.
4. Highlight or underline the independent clauses. Remember, an independent clause is really just a simple sentence.
On the back of the same sheet, students should write out the second column of the Preposition Song three times to help with memorization.

Compound Sentence/ Preposition Song Practice (homework)

Students are to write 10 original compound sentences (sixth grade sentences). They are to label each sentence in the following way:
1. Box each conjunction (FANBOYS).
2. Label the subject (S) and the predicate (P) on on each side of the conjuction (in each independent clause).
3. Make sure that each sentence has a comma before the conjunction (between independent clauses).
4. Highlight or underline each independent clause (exclude the boxed conjunction/FANBOYS).
5. To practice prepositions, they should draw a single line through any prepositional phrases (optional but good practice).
6. Students should use each of the FANBOYS but will need repeat a few. (Some of the sentences may be awkward, especially sentences with "nor" and "for." They can skip "nor" if unsure, but I do want them to attempt all of the others. Also, students need to write one sentence using a semicolon (;) instead of a comma and a conjunction to join two sentences.)
7. Please have them skip lines between sentences in order to make the labeling easy to read.
8. We labeled using several colors. Please have them label in a different color ink.
The second half of the homework is to write out the first column of the Preposition Song (from "about" to "below") three times. They should also practice singing the entire song to be ready for the exam next week. |

Subject and Predicate Homework

Students should complete page 35 (1-26).
They must
1. Write out each sentence.
2. Label the most important noun in the subject and the most important noun in the predicate (label above the word).
3. Draw a dividing line between the subject and predicate.
4. Underline the subject and label it below the sentence.
5. Draw a squiggly line under the predicate and label it below the sentence.
Note: Some of the verbs are not action verbs, so the kids may have difficulty recognizing them as verbs. We made notes on the homework page about those verbs (is, are, were, was, has, have, had, ect.)
#10 is inverted because it is a question. I asked kids to consider it a challenge, but we'll go over it in class.

Annotated Bibliography and Process Papers (ROUGH DRAFTS) (homework)

Students should be working on their Bibliography Rough Drafts at home. They have been given guidelines. They are also welcome to use www.bibme.org to help with the citations.
I will be checking their progress on Monday (Blue Day) and Tuesday (Green Day).
They should type the Annotated Bibliography and have two copies of the draft ready (one for Mr. Switzer and one for me) on November 6th. This is not the final draft. This early Rough deadline is an opportunity for them to come to me with specific questions to answer during class.
For the Process Paper, we will organize and outline the paper early next week. Again, students will need to type the drafts and print out two copies. (More information will be given to students Monday/Tuesday)
FINAL Drafts of the Annotated Bibliography and Process Paper are due November 20th (with the entire project). I will also need copies of both. |

Five Pages in Writer's Notebook (homework)

Part of our class involves writing as often as possible in our class notebooks. Students are expected to write their ideas, stories, and inspirations on the odd numbered pages as we have practiced in class. We call them "freewrite entries" or "independent writing entries."
Students are expected to complete five pages of these freewrite or independent entries. We highlighted the starting page in the notebooks, and students are expected to work on the writing at home, though I often give them some class time. |

Students need to recopy their Rough Drafts (which should already have been edited).
Final Draft Checklist:
1. Written in blue or black ink
2. Mistakes should be crossed out neatly, no scribbles.
3. Written neatly. Handwriting is not part of the grade, but overall presentation is. (No ripped or crumpled pages. Students should write from margin to margin.)
4. Student should have correct class heading. Name, class and period, and date in upper right hand corner (not the DIGS heading we use in the notebook).
5. Title
6. Only write on front side of notebook paper.
7. Students should save their copies of their Final Drafts, Rough Drafts, Brainstorm, and both Checklists (Rough and Editing) to turn in. We will staple them together as a class. |
